Hello Kitty and Friends: Happiness Parade (Japanese: Hello Kitty and Friends: ハピネスパレード), also known as Hello Kitty Happiness Parade, and also stylised as HELLO KITTY AND FRIENDS HAPPINESS PARADE, is a 2022/2023 arcade rhythm game. It is available on iOS/Android, including for Google Play only for Netflix users, and on the Apple App Store. It was later released for Nintendo Switch.[3][4]

The game was originally planned on May 25, 2023 for Nintendo Switch, before being delayed to October 26, 2023.[5] Curiously, Nintendo UK incorrectly lists the release date as 13th April 2023, while Nintendo USA still lists the outdated May 25, 2023 release date. This error also applies to the release data within the Nintendo Switch eShop.[6][7]

General information

Players control groups of three Sanrio characters (or more by unlocking this ability) to dance to various international pop songs. For Nintendo Switch (handheld mode), B-Button makes them stay in place, A-Button makes them step right, and Y-Button makes them step left. The player must dance to the correct rhythm and avoid obstacles for more points, while also collecting coins and cards with character faces on them. The greatest rhythm ranking for each step is Rhythm+.

If a character collides with obstacles too often, the character may be lost for the level. Players can switch to a different character to lead the performance (L-Button for Nintendo Switch version), for reasons such as low health or to use that character's signature ability (with R-Button).

Gameplay takes place in various levels over split paths chosen by the player. If the player loses all characters, they will have to restart from the beginning and play levels from the start of the path again from Sunny fields or The Hidden Kingdom again. There are five different endings. Additional Sanrio characters can be unlocked as the player plays the game, and are unlocked on designated levels. The player can level up a character, and leveling up will cost require a number of cards (specific to that character) and coins. Clearing challenges may reward cards which can be applied to specific characters (chosen by the player).

While playing a level, the character can pass an intermediary photoshoot goal along the way to earn additional happiness points. After passing the photoshoot goal with the character on that goal, points are rewarded for pressing R or L within the area of rhythm circles.

Based on the preliminary happiness points gained during a level, higher happiness points will mean more time for a button-mashing encore minigame after the level, which rewards a few bonus happiness points. A higher frequency of button-mashing will reward more happiness points. Before the encore minigame, the user can also gain more points through their rhythm performance; increasing the point multiplier and adding confetti to the Happiness Parade.

Eating an apple pie item instantly restores a character's ability. Unlockable music tracks are scattered around levels.

Modes

The game features two game modes; Sensory Load Full, and Sensory Load Safe; the latter is to prevent seizures in people who suffer from photosensitive epilepsy. Also in Normal Mode ("the classic experience"), players control the characters themselves, while in Auto Dance Mode, characters will dance for the player.

"Dance to the beat with Hello Kitty and friends!

Cute? Check. Colorful? Check. And way cooler than you think? Triple check.

Get ready for a rad and unexpected journey through the world of Sanrio in a music rhythm game like nothing you’ve experienced before.

Join Hello Kitty and two friends on a delightful music tour as they spread happiness to everyone. Along the way they’ll discover new friends to join their musical parades. However, jealous of Hello Kitty’s growing fanbase, Kurami [sic] will stop at nothing to end the music, dispatching goons and laying traps to stop the momentum.

It’s up to you to dance, dance, dance to the beat, avoid traps, use each character’s unique abilities, collect coins and upgrades, complete challenges, and bring joy to the world around you! With a robust soundtrack filled with over 40 amazing pop hits, you’ll be dancing to the music long after you put the controllers down."
