Sanrio Wiki has moved from ShoutWiki. Account creation is closed to prevent spam on a company typically seen in the West for its children's media. If you want an account here (or to activate your old ShoutWiki account here) it is suggested (though you have free will) get your parent/guardian's permission to use the Internet, and contact EvieMelody (X, formally Twitter) re: account creation or article requests.
Note: Sanrio Wiki is not official and is not run by Sanrio Co., Ltd. or related parties. This wiki uses some low resolution content (images, short sound clips) to describe articles, under fair use (for the purpose of illustrating and describing an article only). All rights are reserved by Sanrio and related parties.
Sometimes this wiki may be a little slow, other times it is faster. This is likely server related. On such days, you may want to stockpile edits offline for later.

This page explains one or more Sanrio Wiki policies, guidelines and/or projects. |
Summary
Hello Kitty + Sanrio Wiki, or simply Sanrio Wiki is an open-content encyclopedia about the Japanese company Sanrio, its subsidiaries and affiliates. Sanrio is a lifestyle brand that aims to spread heart-felt emotion under the philosophy "Small Gift Big Smile".
Sanrio produces and licenses gifts of many kinds. It also works in the publishing and animation industries and runs a franchise of KFC in Saitama, Japan.
Sanrio is loved for its many 'cute' original characters, such as the popular Hello Kitty and other lesser known characters such as My Melody, Cinnamoroll, Keroppi and Hangyodon. It owns rights to the Mr. Men and Peanuts franchises in Japan.
Status
Sanrio Wiki is a project that was started on April 14, 2015 by EvieMelody (Talk). It was hosted on the wiki-farm Shout Wiki, where anyone can create a wiki run under MediaWiki; but in terms of the server, it is now hosted by a small team of volunteers at Grifkuba at sanriowiki.com (practically independent).
Content wise, anyone (except a bot or malicious user such as a phising link spammer) can ask for their user account to be created via EvieMelody's email chickasaurus@hotmail.co.uk, with a random password (which should be changed by the user to their own password afterwards). This lock is to prevent spam (which the old ShoutWiki version still suffers from).
The mainspace of Sanrio Wiki is a canon wiki, meaning that content must reflect something factual pertaining to Sanrio. Sometimes an edit may not reflect that, often out of error, or inexperience (many fans of Sanrio are young and may not fully understand), or be edited/reworded to improve grammar, or an edit might be inaccurate due to vandalism, spam or attack.
Relation to Sanrio Co. Ltd.
EvieMelody intends Sanrio Wiki always to be run by fans, and it is not an official part of the Sanrio company or its affiliates and subsidiaries.
Additionally, content on this wiki cannot be used for commercial purposes (for example: the selling of articles or the limited resolution files. This information and data itself is only available for view under a fair use argument in United States copyright law that copyright can be excempt for the purposes such as research/journalism, documentation, criticism, review, research; including a reasonable use of copyrighted images (in this case all images (except non-copyright material) are a maximum of 400 pixels, and also for reduction of file size).
Articles may also include audio files and videos, as well as formally private content but was exposed to the media so is considered by Sanrio Wiki to be "grey". In these cases, our rules are more up to the copyright claimant, and the claimant can contact EvieMelody from chickasaurus@hotmail.co.uk. Additionally, where external links are involved (such as YouTube); the situation also involves other third-parties such as Google.
Accuracy disclaimer
Sanrio Wiki is happily imperfect. ^^ Please note that while we try to source our content (for certain articles) or report as we observed it (in works such as films, games, books) and improve it, there are bound to be errors, especially with the scope of Sanrio Co., Ltd. and its subsidiaries, relations.
A lot of articles are currently shells for greater scope but lacking in depth (in the interest that they can be filled with greater depth in the future).
Policies
Update as of February 2021: Please include a first party source (such as a Sanrio website, publication or official image) for character articles, since fan made characters can get mixed in with real ones. If an article looks unusual or there is not enough information, it might get deleted.
Update as of May 30 2022: Addition of the third outlier for coverage.
First don't worry if you're new and make a mistake we will amend it for you. ^^
Also write in whichever style you want on the mainspace (this includes article pages but not files, talk pages, user pages), but providing:
Coverage
- All content in the main-space must be relevant to Sanrio. There is an inclusive approach so anything that includes Sanrio characters or has had relationships with Sanrio can be added. There may be a few case-by-case situations; as such:
- Outlier 1: Space-Net: Cosmo Red and Cosmo Blue (and Cosmo Neo) are spiritual successors to Sanrio Timenet: Kako-Hen and Mirai-Hen, but most of the characters have never interacted with Sanrio characters. Therefore, originally characters such as "Tink" were not covered except on Space-Net characters, but can be covered in more depth on sites like Imagineer Wiki instead. Alternatively, and on hindsight, a user can still create Space-Net exclusive articles if they desire; due to Hisato Inoue's past involvement with Timenet in general.
- Outlier 2: Sanrio characters have appeared in the Animal Crossing series, but coverage will be minimal (no non-Sanrio villagers, items, etc. will be covered as it clashes with other Animal Crossing resources).
- Outlier 3: Articles unrelated to Sanrio (such as characters not owned by Sanrio e.g. Pusheen) may be allowed given they have interacted with Sanrio in an officially licensed way, but on a case-by-case basis (e.g. characters appearing together on officially licensed merchandise is allowed but not the above Animal Crossing case).
Style
- Please write articles in the main-space (content articles such as Cinnamoroll) in the third-person. This means do not use words such as "you", "I" or "we". However, they can be substituted for words such as "people", "player(s)", "the player", "they". The purpose of this policy is to keep this website close to a formal encyclopedia.
- For Japanese names, translations may be used for articles named after general words, but when the subject has a proper noun, or katakana representations of English, or is referring to a character, game, television show/anime episode, comic/manga series, publication or chapter it is kept in romanised Japanese. (For example, Postman (Hello Kitty no Happy House) contrasted with Onegai My Melody: ~KuruKuru Shuffle!~.
- In the case that the media has an official English translation, this rule is overrided and the English version is used instead.
- While other users (and interface staff; who are involved with the server and high-level site actions) may originate from other countries, EvieMelody comes from England, so many articles may have be written in Commonwealth English (e.g. "colour" as opposed to "color" unless the latter is part of a product name like Game Boy Color). However, there isn't a rule for which style of English you write in, though out of courtesy it may be nice to keep the style it was originally written (either American English or Commonwealth English).
- Some of our articles use different Japanese romanisation methods; in this case please retain the original romanisation method the editor has chosen. If this pertains to a title, the user however may also create a redirect so that multiple methods are searchable; such as Bunniesfield kara no Tabidachi being a redirect to Bunniesfield kara no Tabidati.
- Articles in other languages are also permitted. A current existing article in Japanese is Ja/ハローキティ (Hello Kitty). The title when possible should be the recognized language code (see ISO 639-1 codes) and the official way the subject is written. As another example; Zh/Hello Kitty 友情總動員 is a potential Chinese article for the video game Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue. The article should contain all instances of within its text to properly document another language on the "in the other languages" section found on the left. For example would add it to the articles in other languages (English) on the Japanese language version.
- Disambiguation pages should have "(disambiguation)" in the title to distinguish them, but don't worry if you didn't know or forgot; a staff member will move it for you.
Privacy
- When adding merchandise images from places like auction sites, please don't state the seller's name as the source in case they don't want their username revealed for non-commercial reasons; rather just that you found it on auction.
- Revision: For fair attribution, you can provide the link without the name (and it is possible the link will eventually expire).
- Please don't add images of Sanrio people from social media, however, pictures from interviews and commercial products (e.g. books) is allowed.
- Leaked content is permitted on a case by case basis, based on factors such as the age of the content leaked (e.g. Hello Kitty Pocket Camera is from the '90s so is more permissible than a 2020s leak); and must still fall under fair use (when disseminating it please use a limited number of media and in low resolution).
Fair use and copyright
- Since copyright on a character development company may be more sensitive, copyrighted images including characters can only have that character as a maximum of 400 pixels wide/high to qualify as fair use. Otherwise, a high resolution is fine.
- Copying information word for word on to the Sanrio Wiki from places where you are not the author (such as Wikipedia) is not allowed. However, you can put them in your own words and cite the original page. Citation of where you found the original information appeals to Creative Commons.
- For copyrighted audio clips (it is possible to upload .ogg music files and link to them to play in your browser), there is no clear rule but they should be of relatively low quality and contain only a small portion of the media. Additionally, the .ogg must not come from a leak, but if the music is otherwise used in another non-leaked source, this version can be used instead.
- Do not link to piracy sites, pirated media, or endorse them. In the case content was taken from there to illustrate a page, it should be modified to fit the fair use policies (so a limited number of low resolution screenshots of an animation to explain something difficult to do in words may be acceptable, but not an entire broadcast).
- For merchandise which came from a dedicated written catalogue such as Kitty Goods Collection, do not use images scanned from there, and try to find another image of that product from a different source.
Other rules
Policies -
- If citing a secondary or tertiary source, be sure to note the author in addition to citing the primary source if known.
- There is no notability rule, as long as it's linked with Sanrio, Peanuts, Mr. Men and Little Miss (pertaining to their characters, settings, franchises, and so on). This includes very minor details such as the llama from Kennedy Publishing's Hello Kitty magazine. For other franchises pertaining to Category:Characters used by Sanrio under license and Category:Third party characters, inclusion is taken on a case-by-base basis; but there is no solid rule as of now.
- Freedom of expression is good; so adding as ~, ^^, :( to articles is welcome. This doesn't mean you have to not add them or take a serious style though.
- Original research is welcome based on trust, but there should be one image of the subject and/or one official source, at least.
- No fanon is accepted unless on Sanrio Wiki:Wall of fan works, Sanrio Wiki:Artwork Portal, Sanrio Wiki:Fanfiction Portal, any potential other portals. Individual creations are /(your subject).
- Censorship may be handled depending on the context.
- Darker topic gets the {{Dangerous}} template.
- Divination, uranai and fortune telling will get a safety warning.
- Media which may cause photo-sensitive epilepsy is strictly prohibited, except for the media's description in word.
- Leaks are covered if over 2 years old (e.g. Hello Kitty Pocket Camera), yet it's not legal to have non-fair use versions of the links (e.g. it's not acceptable to upload the ROM of that game). User data, photographs of people, data identifying a person are strictly prohibited.
- If one of your photographs/scans/images was taken from the web (e.g. pertaining to an auction item), you can also send a takedown request.
- In certain cases, scans are not permitted. Such as photographs from locations with a clear no photography sign, or scans from museum books.
- Images with watermarks should not be uploaded, out of respect that the author may not want them to be shared by others.
- Hate speech on the wiki is also strictly prohibited, for all namespaces.
- Kawaii is considered different to cute here in a cultural way, but it's not a strict rule to distinguish them; anything here can be described as either cute or kawaii, depending on opinion.

- Missing information can also be found on other Sanrio related wikis. Note that a wiki is a concept (so most of these wikis are unrelated to the this wiki in terms of ownership); as just like wikis are designed so that anyone can edit them (or can easily be edited), anyone can also create a wiki; and multiple wikis about similar subjects can run parallel.
