The creation of Mii-tan was part of a collaboration between founder of Sanrio president Shintaro Tsuji (Sanrio was originally known as Yamanashi Silk Center in 1960) and celebrity 1960s Japanese cartoonist Ado Mizumori (affectionately known as Ado-chan), and known for her previous kawaii fictional children characters.
It was Shintaro Tsuji who approached Ado-chan; and hired her tasked with designing a cute cat character.
